Our Coaches and Mentors

Richard Wooles' team includes Nigel Ellsay, Kurt Innes and Leah Kirchmann, as well as current and recently retired riders and sports experts.

  • Richard Wooles

    Richard Wooles

    Wooles was part of the Great Britain coaching team at the 2000 Sydney and 2004 Athens Olympics and was the National Track Coach for Canada at the 2008 Beijing and 2012 London Olympics. He has recently returned to Canada after working with road cyclists at the UCI World Cycling Centre in Aigle, Switzerland, from 2018 to 2020. His passion for inspiring and guiding young riders is legendary.

  • Nigel Ellsay

    Nigel Ellsay

    Nigel is a coach and the road lead at Cycling Canada. Nigel received some of his first road cycling experiences by attending the first edition of the Hayman camp in 2010 held in Rossland, BC. Since then, he has lived, raced, and trained as a pro and amateur in Europe, Asia, and North America, as well as racing and coaching at the World Championships and Major Games. Nigel is a big advocate of the Hayman camp where he hopes he can help inspire and educate the next generation.

    Kurt Innes

    Kurt is a former National Team and Olympic Coach, and has been a Chartered Professional Coach (ChPC) since 2000. As a coach, Kurt has contributed to the achievement of success of multiple athletes spanning National, World Championship, Commonwealth Games, Pan-Am Games and Olympic Games events.

    Kurt’s passion lies in supporting athletes learn new skills and achieve personal success on and off the bike. Kurt has coached several camps in the Okanagan over the years and is looking forward to the 2026 camp and to meeting new athletes.

  • Future Champions 2023 Camp

    Leah Kirchmann

    Leah is a retired WorldTour cyclist and two-time Olympian from Winnipeg, Canada. She began racing at 13 through the Kids of Mud mountain bike program and developed as a multi-sport athlete, including cross-country skiing. Leah raced at the highest levels of road cycling, competing at multiple Olympic Games, World Championships, and Commonwealth Games.

    She now coaches athletes across all levels, works with provincial and national programs, and serves as Managing Director of the Global Relay Bridge the Gap Fund, helping inspire and support the next generation of Canadian cyclists. Leah is looking forward to meeting all the riders at Future Champions camp and sharing as much knowledge as possible.
